Flooding Prediction Update

posted in Public Works on June 23, 2024

Update as of Sunday, June 23 11:15 AM:
We are still monitoring the latest forecasts from NOAA. A couple of key points to take away from this midday update:

  • Charles City is forecasted to crest at 20.5 ft at 7:00 am Monday (6/24), this will push back Waverly's crest to Tuesday (6/25) in the early morning hours, possibly just after midnight.
  • Janesville's forecast has been updated to crest at 14.0 ft at 7:00 am on Tuesday.

These forecasts are very similar to the May 2013 flood event where Charles City crested at 19.49 ft, Janesville crested at 14.62 ft, which yielded a crest for Waverly of 13.13 ft.

A reminder to citizens, we expect the following impacts as the water rises:

  • 10-11 ft - Utilities assess when power will need to be shut off to impacted areas (primarily SE).
  • 11.5 ft - Water overtops 7th Ave SE - road will be closed.
  • 12.0 ft - Official minor flood stage for Waverly. Water crosses 4th Street SE from the east rendering access to the area around Southeast school difficult or impossible.
  • 13.0 ft - 7th Ave SE, 4th St SE, and 8th St SE will now be closed.
  • 13.5 ft - Cedar Lane will be closed at 2 locations (north and south of Murphy Addition's entrances).

These predictions are subject to change with forecast updates from NOAA and additional rainfall in these areas and areas north.
