Flood Plain Development

Floodplain Management & Zoning Compliance
The State of Iowa delegates authority to cities to enact zoning regulations that promote public health, safety, and wellfare, including measures to protect against flood hazards.
The Community Development Office enforces standards for developments located within the high risk flood hazard areas identified on FEMA's Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs). These standards are essential to ensure safe and resilient development in vulnerable areas.
In Waverly, all new or substantially improved structures located in flood-prone zones (designated as "A" or "AE" on FIRMS) are required to have the lowest floor, including basements, elevated a minimum of one (1) foot above the one hundred (100) year flood level.
For more information, view the Zoning Section (102) of the Waverly City Code.
